Harry Truman was the owner and operator of the Mount St. Helens Lodge located near the base of Mount St. Helens in Washington state. He gained national attention in the months leading up to the eruption of the volcano in May 1980, as he refused to evacuate despite repeated warnings from officials that the volcano was at high risk of erupting. Truman had lived near the mountain for over 50 years and felt a deep connection to the area. He ultimately chose to remain at the lodge during the eruption and was tragically killed, along with 56 others, when the volcano exploded on May 18, 1980. Truman's refusal to evacuate became a controversial subject and raised questions about the responsibility of individuals to heed warnings from officials in the face of potential danger.
